Catholic Teachers Join CUPE Education Workers in Solidarity; Demand the Ford Government Withdraw Shameful Legislation

Yesterday, the Ontario School Board Council of Unions’ (OSBCU), which represents Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) education workers in publicly funded school boards in Ontario, gave their five-days notice ahead of their job action. Today, the Ford government introduced legislation to prevent that job action and impose a contract on CUPE education workers. The government also invoked the notwithstanding clause to pre-empt and negate any legal legislative challenge.

This legislation, which violates CUPE members’ Charter rights to free, fair, and meaningful collective
bargaining, is yet another flagrant abuse of power that fails students and the educators that serve them.
In response today, OECTA President Barb Dobrowolski released a statement demanding that Premier Doug
Ford immediately withdraw this shameful legislation and return to the bargaining table.
