Award Nomination

Individuals or groups can nominate OECTA members for the following awards:

Beginning Permanent Teacher of the Year Award
The Beginning Teacher of the Year award is intended to honour a teacher in the Waterloo Catholic District School Board who is in their first five years of the profession. Please consider nominating a teacher that you respect for their quality of interaction with students, parents and staff, and who demonstrates excellence and a true dedication to teaching (eg. teaching experience, teaching style and noteworthy attributes, dedication and involvement in the Board, etc.).

Dedication to Catholic Education Award
The Dedication to Catholic Education Award is intended to honour a teacher in the Waterloo Catholic District School Board who has made an outstanding contribution to Catholic Education through their interactions with children, staff, and the greater community. Please consider nominating a teacher that you would want your own family exposed to. This person should have a well-developed sense of professionalism, and should be respected for their involvement with people on a personal or professional level, beyond the requirements dictated by their position. The nomination letter can include, but is not limited to, the following ideas: Contribution to Catholic Education, Community Service, Parish Involvement, why the teacher is exceptional, etc.

The Dwyer and Sheila Sullivan Award
The Dwyer and Sheila Sullivan Award honours a teacher OR teachers in the Waterloo Catholic District School Board who has/have been involved in social justice issues within their school, their parish, or their community. Please consider nominating a teacher or teachers who is/are a role model of compassion and caring for the marginalized and impoverished in our communities (eg. Social Justice projects, demonstration of leadership, examples of compassion and care shown for the marginalized/impoverished, etc.).

Paul Sousa Occasional Teacher of the Year Award
The Paul Sousa Occasional Teacher of the Year award is intended to honour any Occasional Teacher in the Waterloo Catholic District School Board who has made an outstanding contribution in their role in our schools. Please consider nominating a teacher that you respect for their quality of interaction with students and/or staff, and who demonstrates an on-going dedication to teaching. The nomination letter can include, but is not limited to, the following ideas: involvement in school, commitment to learning examples, nominee’s noteworthy attributes, etc.

Association Representative of the Year Award
The Staff Rep of the Year Award is intended to honour a Teacher in the Waterloo Catholic District School Board who has demonstrated excellence in their role as an OECTA Staff Rep. Please consider nominating a staff rep that has shown a willingness to be involved in educational matters, or that you feel has served their school community well in their role as a Staff Rep. The nomination letter can include, but is not limited to, the following ideas: nominee’s noteworthy attributes, examples of advocacy shown for teachers, contributions made at local or provincial level, etc.

Service to Members Award
The Service to Members Award is intended to honour a Teacher in the Waterloo Catholic District School Board who has demonstrated outstanding service to members of the Unit outside of formal OECTA parameters. Please consider nominating a teacher that has shown a willingness to be involved in educational matters, or that you feel has served their school community well. The nomination letter can include, but is not limited to, the following ideas: nominee’s noteworthy attributes, examples of advocacy shown for teachers, contributions made to the school, etc.
Please note: Teachers who are actively involved with OECTA or who will receive an honoraria in the current year are not eligible for this award.
