WATERLOO REGION — Local schools have been given $3 million more by the provincial government but will have 1,200 more students to teach.

This works out to a reduction of one per cent in basic operational funding per student in September.

More provincial funding is on its way for special initiatives such as math, mental health and special education. Local amounts have not yet been revealed.

Education Minister Lisa Thompson calls the funding announced by the Progressive Conservative government “a responsible approach to balancing the budget” that protects the education system.

Teacher unions disagree.
