Glen Hodgson is “nervous” and “greatly concerned” after the province recommended last week Ontario school boards implement a hiring freeze.

The president of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation local, representing high school teachers in the Near North District School Board, calls the request irresponsible at a time when the province is downloading and cutting services.

“Cuts to programs, such as autism funding, will require additional supports in schools,” he says.

“We’re struggling to meet the needs. And you can see by the vacancies in our system, there are definitely needs. We have a great deal of concern.”

Hodgson says there is very little information coming from the school board, but he expects vacancies will continue to be filled.
